McKinnon Must Protest East Timor Militia Attacks on UN

The Green Party has called for Foreign Minister Don McKinnon to vigorously protest the latest militia attack on UN force in East Timor.

“We owe it to the Kiwi police officers serving with the UN to take up the issue with the Indonesians in the strongest possible manner,” said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke.

“Apparently one of our police officers was helping protect the convoy which was attacked yesterday. Now four New Zealand officers have been withdrawn to the capital Dili.

“The whole referendum process is in danger unless countries with personnel on the UN force demand that Indonesia puts the leash on the militias.

“This is the third militia attack on the UN in a week,” said Mr Locke.
