New Zealand missed a golden opportunity to deliver a blunt ‘no war’ message to George Bush in our UN Ambassador’s statement to the United Nations on February 19, said Keith Locke. He criticised Helen Clark for ”betting a bob each way on war”. Read

Commenting on the impressive turnout at antiwar rallies around the country on February 15, Jeanette Fitzsimons warned Helen Clark not to dismiss the significance of the protests as Keith Holyoake dismissed the Vietnam War protests, and to demonstrate independence in New Zealand’s foreign policy. Helen Clark argues that as a loyal member of the United Nations we are obliged to implement Security Council decisions.
Such an approach has no moral or legal credibility. It was clearly established by the Nuremberg Tribunal that obeying orders or implementing a decision made by a higher body was no excuse for participating in mass murder. And we are talking about mass murder. United States strategists are talking about sending 800 Cruise missiles against Iraq in the first 48 hours, and crippling water and electricity supplies.” Keith Locke stated the Green Party’s position that it does not support an attack on Iraq, with or without a UN Security Council mandate, in Parliament on February 12. The UN Security Council is under heavy pressure from the USA and the UK to agree to an attack on Iraq. You can contact any or all of the members of the Security Council at the addresses below, and urge them to continue to work for the non-violent disarmament of Iraq, which does NOT present an immediate danger to even its neighbours, let alone the US or the UK. Also urge them not to succumb to the hypocrisy of enforcing resolutions against Iraq when other states in the region (particularly Israel) have also breached resolutions repeatedly, without even being sanctioned, let alone attacked.
